Tub-to-shower conversions

Old tub out. Walk-in shower in.

A tub-to-shower conversion pulls the tub nobody uses and puts a low step-in shower in the same footprint. We usually open all three shower walls to the studs, rebuild with new backing and a solid pan, and set acrylic walls with no grout to scrub. Grab bars and a seat can go in the same day. Conversions often finish in a day once materials are on site.

Tub-to-shower conversions

Tub-to-shower conversions we've finished

The old tub came out and a low step-in walk-in shower went in the same spot. The split photos show the same bathroom before and after.

Before and after tub-to-shower conversion: tub under a window replaced by a walk-in shower with a sliding glass door

Tub-to-shower

Before, the tub under the window mostly sat empty. Now the morning light lands on a shower you walk into, and a sliding glass door keeps the water where it belongs.

Before and after tub-to-shower conversion: tub replaced by a walk-in shower with marble-look walls and a low shower base

Tub-to-shower

Why we set a low shower base here: the floor stays close to level with the bathroom, so getting in feels easy on knees and hips.

Before and after tub-to-shower conversion: old tub replaced by a walk-in shower with marble-look walls, grab bars and a shower seat

Tub-to-shower

Same footprint, and the room feels twice as open.

Before and after tub-to-shower conversion: tub with gold-frame doors replaced by a walk-in shower with a clear sliding door

Tub-to-shower

Same footprint, but a much more open room with acrylic walls.

Before and after tub-to-shower conversion: step-up soaking tub replaced by a walk-in shower under the same window

Tub-to-shower

The high tub came out, and the shower under that window is an easy step in.

Before and after tub-to-shower conversion: old one-piece tub-and-shower unit replaced by a walk-in shower with acrylic walls

Tub-to-shower

The one-piece unit came out, and a walk-in shower finally fits how the room is used.

Before and after: tiled tub alcove replaced by marble-look acrylic walk-in shower

Tub-to-shower

Once the tub was gone, the whole room could breathe.

Before and after tub-to-shower beside the toilet

Tub-to-shower

Most homes don't need a bigger bathroom. They need the tub out of the way.

Before and after tub-to-shower with sliding glass

Tub-to-shower

Kids grown, tub unused. Swap it for a shower you walk right into.

Before and after tub-to-shower under a multi-pane window

Tub-to-shower

We changed one thing: how you get in. Everything you liked about the room stayed.

Before and after tub-to-shower with white acrylic walls

Tub-to-shower

A balancing act belongs in the circus, not your shower.

Before and after tub-to-shower with teal walls

Tub-to-shower

You've talked about redoing it for years. This is what "someday" looks like.

Walk-in shower with subway-look walls, a glass door, and the shower base visible

Tub-to-shower

The tub is gone, and the subway-look shower behind the glass door is easy to wipe down.

How a conversion goes

Tear out. Rebuild. Walk in.

  1. 01

Tub out, walls to the studs

The old tub and the shower walls come out, so we can see what is behind them. Not a thin overlay over old tile.

  2. 02

    Inspect and rebuild

We look for rot, mold and tired plumbing while the walls are open, then rebuild with new backing and a proper shower pan.

  3. 03

    Set the walls

Full Wall Acrylic Panel in solid, stone or tile looks, or Palisade Tile acrylic with a sealed tongue-and-groove. No grout.

  4. 04

    Safety and fixtures

Valve, door, grab bars, a seat and a handheld. A low threshold you step over, not a tub wall you climb.

Because the bathroom is already open, it is also the easiest time to swap an old toilet. See water rebates for high-efficiency toilets.

Same footprint.

The shower goes where the tub was, so the room keeps its layout and you get more room to stand.

A low step-in.

No more swinging a leg over a tub wall. A solid pan with a low threshold, plus grab bars and a seat if you want them.

Pick the walls.

Full Wall Acrylic Panel or Palisade Tile acrylic, in marble, stone, subway or solid looks.

Questions

Before you book the visit.

How long does a tub-to-shower conversion take?

Tub-to-shower conversions often finish in a day once materials are on site. Hidden rot or plumbing repairs can take longer. We tell you that on the visit.

Do you install over existing tile?

Usually no. The usual method is demo to the studs, then rebuild and set acrylic or Palisade Tile acrylic. Overlay is rare, and only if we both agree.

Can I keep a tub somewhere?

If there is room for both, a California bath keeps a soaking tub and adds a walk-in shower in the same wet area. See California baths →

Where do you work?

Orange, Los Angeles, Riverside & San Bernardino Counties. Based in Placentia. In-home estimate — no showroom runaround.

Can a tub-to-shower conversion include a seat and grab bars?

Yes. A tub-to-shower conversion can give you a low step-in shower with a shower seat, a handheld sprayer and grab bars.

Why do you open the walls to the studs?

So we can find and fix what's behind the old walls. Tile that looks fine from the doorway can have damaged backing behind it, so the usual path is demo to the studs, then rebuild with a new valve and drain and set the new walls.

What does your warranty cover?

Limited lifetime warranty on the shower base and wall materials, plus a 10-year workmanship warranty. For the original homeowner; not transferable.

How much does a tub-to-shower conversion cost?

Tub-to-shower conversions and tub replacements start at $10,000. Full bathroom remodels are quoted per project. Request a free estimate at newbath-usa.com.

Will the new shower fit in the same space as my tub?

Yes. The shower goes where the tub was, so the room keeps its layout and you get more room to stand.

What wall options can I pick for the new shower?

Full Wall Acrylic Panel or Palisade Tile acrylic, in marble, stone, subway or solid looks. We bring samples to your free in-home estimate so you can see them in your own light.

Can you replace an old fiberglass tub-and-shower unit?

Yes. We remove the old fiberglass unit, usually open all three shower walls to the studs, and rebuild with new backing, a solid pan and acrylic walls.

Can I finance a tub-to-shower conversion?

Yes. Monthly financing available through Acorn Finance for qualified buyers; rates and terms depend on credit approval.
