It is a shower you walk into instead of climbing into a tub. We take the old tub out and put a low step-in acrylic shower in the same footprint, so the room keeps its layout and you get more room to stand.
How low is the step?
We build a solid pan with a low threshold, so you step over a low edge instead of a tub wall. The standard curb is 4 inches. Our Easy Step curb is 2 inches, and a stone base curb is 1 inch. We confirm the right height for your bathroom at the free in-home estimate. This page does not describe a curbless or wheelchair roll-in shower.
Can a seat and grab bars go in with the shower?
Yes. A tub-to-shower conversion can give you a low step-in shower with a shower seat, a handheld sprayer and grab bars. Because the usual method is demo to the studs, then rebuild, the seat and grab bars go in while the walls are open, alongside the new valve and drain. See shower seats and grab bars.
A finished conversion with grab bars and a shower seat.
The tub came out and a low step-in shower with white acrylic walls went in.
How long does it take?
Tub-to-shower conversions often finish in a day once materials are on site. Hidden rot or plumbing repairs can take longer, and we tell you that on the visit.
What does the work include?
- 01
Tub out, walls to the studs
The old tub and the shower walls come out, so we can see what is behind them. Not a thin overlay over old tile.
- 02
Inspect and rebuild
We look for rot, mold and tired plumbing while the walls are open, then rebuild with new backing and a proper shower pan.
- 03
Set the walls
Full Wall Acrylic Panel in solid, stone or tile looks, or Palisade Tile acrylic with a sealed tongue-and-groove. No grout.
- 04
Fixtures
Valve, door, grab bars, a seat and a handheld. A low threshold you step over, not a tub wall you climb.
Why acrylic walls?
We set acrylic walls with no grout to scrub: Full Wall Acrylic Panel in large seamless sheets, or Palisade Tile acrylic with a sealed tongue-and-groove. Acrylic panels are non-porous. See the acrylic wall systems.
What do homeowners add when they renovate a bathroom for aging in place?
In the 2026 U.S. Houzz Bathroom Trends Study, a survey of 1,619 U.S. homeowners on Houzz (page 1), homeowners renovating a bathroom for aging in place most often chose grab bars (63%) and nonslip flooring (56%) (page 20). Next came a low-curb shower (55%) and a curbless shower (32%) (page 20). Where a bathtub was removed, 79% of renovating homeowners used the space to enlarge the shower (page 30). These are survey numbers from Houzz, not New Bath Co customer data.
We install the shower, seat, handheld and grab bars described on this page. Tell us at the visit what else is on your list.
How much does a walk-in shower cost?
Tub-to-shower conversions and tub replacements start at $10,000. Full bathroom remodels are quoted per project. Your exact price depends on the footprint, the walls, the pan and the fixtures you pick. We measure in your house and give you a written price. See the cost guide.
Can I finance it?
Yes. Monthly financing available through Acorn Finance for qualified buyers; rates and terms depend on credit approval.
Can the VA help pay for a bathroom change?
The VA has a benefit called HISA (Home Improvements and Structural Alterations) for medically necessary changes to a Veteran’s or servicemember’s primary residence. VA lists use of essential lavatory and sanitary facilities, such as roll-in showers, among the purposes. It is a lifetime benefit of $6,800 or $2,000 depending on the disability, it needs a VA physician’s prescription, and your local VA Prosthetic and Sensory Aids Service can tell you what you qualify for. See the VA HISA page. New Bath Co does not run this program and cannot promise approval or savings. New Bath Co is veteran-owned. If you plan to apply, tell us at the free estimate.

Walk-in tub or walk-in shower: which fits?
A walk-in tub is the pick if you want to keep soaking: it is a full bath with a door, a seat and a grab bar. A tub-to-shower conversion suits people who mostly shower, with a low step-in shower, a seat, a handheld sprayer and grab bars. We can compare both at the in-home estimate. Walk-in tub vs. walk-in shower.
